Puerto Rico faces widespread blackout as over 1.3 million left without power

Puerto Rico

A massive blackout hit nearly all of Puerto Rico early Tuesday, leaving over 1.3 million residents without power just as they prepared to celebrate the New Year. Officials from Luma Energy, the private company responsible for electricity distribution, warned that it could take up to two days to restore service.

The outage, caused by a failure in an underground power line, left the island in silence, with air conditioners and electrical appliances going dark. While some residents relied on generators, many others, like 63-year-old RaΓΊl Pacheco, made do with less comfort, planning to sleep on balconies.

Luma Energy is working to restore power as soon as possible, but ongoing challenges with the island’s aging power grid, worsened by Hurricane Maria in 2017, mean blackouts continue to disrupt daily life.
