Over 60 German Universities Quit X Over Value Concerns

X

More than 60 German universities, including Goethe University and Free University of Berlin, have exited the social media platform X, citing “value incompatibility.”

In a joint statement on January 10, the institutions criticized algorithm changes under Elon Musk’s ownership that amplify right-wing populist content and restrict balanced views. This, they argue, undermines their commitment to fact-based communication and democratic principles.

Despite leaving, the universities will keep their accounts active to prevent misuse. They are exploring alternatives like Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads for future engagement.

The move mirrors similar actions by European research bodies, signaling a growing challenge for scientific discourse on social media.
