The Punjab government has revamped its matriculation curriculum by introducing new subjects beyond the traditional science and arts streams. Starting this year, students will be able to opt for courses in fields such as information technology, health sciences, agriculture science, technology entrepreneurship, and fashion designing.
The initiative aims to modernize the education system by offering practical, career-oriented subjects that better prepare students for the challenges of today’s global market. According to the Punjab Education Minister, this shift from conventional learning to specialized skills training will provide students with knowledge aligned with contemporary demands.

Students will now be able to select these subjects at the start of Class IX, with the new major courses carrying between 100 to 150 marks. These fields will be prominently displayed on their result cards, giving students a clear focus on their chosen career path from an early age.
The decision has been widely welcomed, with parents and educators praising the government for taking steps to equip students with relevant, future-focused skills. The School Education Department is already gathering data on students interested in these new streams for the current academic session.
