Neymar’s Al-Hilal Departure: £131 Million for 7 Matches

Neymar has parted ways with Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal by mutual consent, after an underwhelming spell at the club. The Brazilian star’s tenure, marked by injuries and limited impact, has been deemed one of the worst transfer deals in football history. Signed in August 2023 for £78 million, Neymar earned an annual salary of £87.5 million and numerous perks, including a private jet and a luxury house.

In his 18-month stint, Neymar played only seven matches, earning an eye-watering £131 million, translating to £21.35 million per game. His performance was largely hindered by injuries, including a knee injury in October 2023, which sidelined him for an extended period. Despite high expectations, Neymar managed just one goal and three assists for Al Hilal.

Al Hilal’s manager, Jorge Jesus, had criticized Neymar’s physical condition earlier this year, stating that the Brazilian could no longer play at the world-class level expected of him. Neymar’s injury struggles, particularly a knee injury and a subsequent hamstring tear, limited his availability.

With his time in Saudi Arabia now over, Neymar is reportedly close to returning to Santos, his boyhood club in Brazil. At 32, his hopes of representing Brazil in the 2026 World Cup appear slim, as coach Dorival Junior has excluded him from recent plans. Neymar’s future in top-flight football remains uncertain, as his career is now overshadowed by persistent injuries.
