The hotel, operated for nearly two decades by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, was a key destination for business travelers and foreign guests. In a statement, Serena confirmed its closure from February 1, 2025, with operations now being managed by the state-owned Hotel State Owned Corporation (HSOC).

Serena described the hotel as an “iconic presence” and part of Kabul’s social fabric. Taliban officials have not yet commented on the transition, and media access to the property remains restricted.
