As egg prices skyrocket due to a widespread bird flu outbreak, many Americans are turning to raising chickens at home to ensure a reliable source of eggs. In January, egg prices surged over 15% from the previous month, the largest increase since 2015, and have risen by 55% compared to the same time last year, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This sharp price hike has significantly contributed to the highest inflation rate in the country since August 2023. As a result, a growing number of Americans are looking for alternative solutions, with many opting to raise chickens at home to offset rising costs. John Berry, a poultry supplier in Houston, reported a surge in demand, saying, “Our sales for poultry have doubled or maybe tripled. I mean, we’re selling 100 chickens a week or more.”

The bird flu outbreak, which led to the culling of over 21 million egg-laying hens in 2024, has caused a drastic reduction in egg supply. With premium eggs now costing as much as $10 per dozen in supermarkets, even businesses are feeling the pinch. Retailers like Trader Joe’s and Costco have imposed limits on egg purchases, while Waffle House has added a 50-cent surcharge per egg in their dishes.
In response, people like Arturo Becerra, who recently purchased 10 hens, are finding that raising chickens could be a cost-effective solution. “Eggs are very expensive. I think it will be cheaper to buy hens and raise them,” Becerra said. Berry echoed this sentiment, noting that many of his customers are first-time chicken farmers who see this as a practical way to get fresh eggs without relying on stores.
However, experts caution that replenishing egg-laying hens lost to the bird flu will take months, meaning the egg shortage and elevated prices may continue for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, the CDC has advised those raising chickens to follow safety guidelines, as those handling infected animals remain at higher risk.
As the shortage drags on, more Americans may join the movement of home chicken farming to avoid the burden of high egg prices.
