Patriarchy Debate Ignited by Saima Qureshi’s Remarks

Patriarchy

Pakistani actress Saima Qureshi’s recent comments on working women have sparked a heated debate on social media. Speaking on the FHM podcast, the DuniyaPur actor stated that a woman’s earnings do not hold the same value as a man’s and that a “real woman” prioritizes household responsibilities over a career. Her remarks have drawn widespread criticism, with many calling them a reinforcement of outdated gender norms.

The discussion highlights the persistent gender bias in Pakistan, where working women often face scrutiny for balancing careers and family life. The long-standing stereotype of “lady doctors,” “lady police officers,” and the ever-ridiculed “lady drivers” further reflects how women’s roles are framed differently compared to men. While Saima Qureshi did not specifically comment on female drivers, social attitudes continue to mock women behind the wheel despite statistics proving otherwise.

Beyond Pakistan, patriarchy thrives in subtle ways worldwide. Western societies may not impose traditional gender roles as openly, but women still bear the bulk of household and childcare responsibilities. From school runs to managing household tasks, working mothers remain the “default parent,” while fathers stepping in is often viewed as “babysitting.” These ingrained biases highlight how patriarchy adapts rather than disappears.

In response to such societal norms, satire and activism continue to challenge these perceptions. The anonymous social media account Man Who Has It All humorously flips gender roles to expose the absurdity of such stereotypes. With an upcoming book, Flipping Patriarchy: Imagining a Gender-Swapped World, set for release in March, the conversation on gender equality is far from over.
