South African captain Temba Bavuma has warned against underestimating Australia ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 showdown in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. Despite missing key pacers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, Australia showcased their batting firepower by pulling off a record-breaking 352-run chase against England.
Bavuma acknowledged Australia’s strong record in ICC tournaments, emphasizing that they remain a formidable force. “Any Australian outfit in an ICC event is always one that you don’t take lightly,” he said. However, he also pointed out potential weaknesses in their bowling attack, hinting that South Africa’s batters could capitalize on those opportunities.

South Africa started their campaign with a dominant win over Afghanistan, posting 315-6 before restricting their opponents to 208. Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a maiden ODI century, while Bavuma, Aiden Markram, and Rassie van der Dussen also made key contributions. However, Heinrich Klaasen remains a fitness concern after missing the first game due to a sore elbow.
The Proteas are eager to break their long-standing ICC trophy drought, with Bavuma expressing optimism about their chances. “Confidence is good, and we’re quite bullish about our chances,” he said, as South Africa looks to build momentum in Group B.
