Heavy Snowfall Hits Abbottabad’s Hilly Areas, Bringing Road Closures and Freezing Temperatures

The hilly areas of Abbottabad, including Thandiyani, Nathiagali, Donga Gali, and Ayubia, have recently experienced the heaviest snowfall of the ongoing winter season. In the past few days, snowfall of one to two feet has been recorded in Thandiyani and the upper regions of Galiyat, resulting in freezing temperatures and significant road blockages.

Due to the heavy snow, almost all link roads in Galiyat were closed, while the main Abbottabad to Murree road was also blocked at various points. The Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) quickly responded by employing four snow-removing machines, which worked from both ends of the road to clear snow. The road from Bara Gali to Nathia Gali was reopened after snow clearance operations.

The GDA and Rescue 1122 teams played a critical role in restoring accessibility to the region. Traffic police and Rescue 1122 personnel were stationed at information centers to assist tourists, while blockades were set up at Harno and Barian to ensure safety. Tourists and locals were informed of the severe weather conditions and advised on safety measures.

In addition to Abbottabad, Balakot and Kaghan Valley experienced severe weather as well. Kaghan and Shogran were blanketed with up to one foot of snow, while Naran received up to three feet. Heavy rainfall in Balakot and snowfall in surrounding areas have also revived natural springs and streams, putting an end to the region’s dry spell.
