Former Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Iftikhar Sirohey Passes Away at 87

Retired four-star admiral and former Pakistan Navy Chief, Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey, passed away at the age of 87 in Islamabad on Thursday.

Following his demise, condolences poured in, with current Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, paying tribute to his distinguished service and contributions to the nation. Admiral Ashraf acknowledged Sirohey’s invaluable role in strengthening the Pakistan Navy and his significant impact on national defense.

Sirohey served as the Chief of Naval Staff in the late 1980s before becoming the sixth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in 1988, holding the position until his retirement in the 1990s. He was only the second four-star admiral in Pakistan Navy history to assume the role of Chairman Joint Chiefs.

His naval career began as a midshipman, receiving training at the Pakistan Military Academy before furthering his education at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, UK, where he specialized in signals and navigation, earning a degree in electrical engineering.

Sirohey later joined the Navy’s Engineering Branch and played a pivotal role in the 1965 and 1971 wars against India, demonstrating exceptional leadership and expertise in maritime defense.
