Waqar Younis Defends 1990s Cricket Era Amid Hafeez’s Criticism

Waqar Younis Defends 1990s Cricket Era Amid Hafeez’s Criticism

In response to recent remarks by Mohammad Hafeez about Pakistan’s 1990s cricket stars, former fast bowler Waqar Younis took to social media to defend his generation. Younis shared a nostalgic post on X (formerly Twitter), featuring a throwback picture with fellow bowling legend Wasim Akram, highlighting their impressive bowling records.

Younis captioned the post “90’s KA LONDA (Boys from the 90s),” implying that their achievements on the field were enough to speak for their legacy. He included detailed statistics of their combined performances, showcasing 191 Test matches, 618 ODIs, 1705 wickets, and 66 five-wicket hauls, among other records.

The post came in response to Hafeez’s recent comments questioning the legacy of the 1990s cricket legends, despite their star power. Hafeez, while analysing Pakistan’s early exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy, pointed out that although the 1990s team had big names like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Shoaib Akhtar, they failed to win an ICC title beyond the 1992 World Cup.

“I am a huge fan of those who played in the 1990s, but when it comes to legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan. They didn’t win an ICC event – they lost the 1996, 1999, and 2003 World Cups,” Hafeez remarked, stirring a debate about the contributions of that era to Pakistan cricket.

As Pakistan continues to face challenges, especially following their disappointing performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy, discussions around legacy and team performance have resurfaced. The 1990s cricket stars, now often seen as commentators, continue to draw both praise and criticism for their contributions to the sport.
