Chinese Scientists Develop World’s First Carbon-Based AI Chip

AI

Chinese researchers have developed the world’s first carbon-based microchip capable of running AI tasks using a ternary logic system, marking a major leap in semiconductor technology.

Developed by Peking University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, the chip utilizes carbon nanotubes (CNTs) instead of traditional silicon, offering superior electrical conductivity and energy efficiency. Unlike conventional binary chips, this chip processes data in three states, enabling faster computations while reducing power consumption.

The research team built a neural network on the chip, achieving perfect accuracy in handwritten digit classification. While CNT chips still lag in integration density compared to silicon, scientists believe they could become mainstream in 10-15 years, potentially revolutionizing AI, IoT, and high-performance computing.
