President Asif Ali Zardari has announced a 180-day special remission in sentences for specific categories of prisoners in honor of Pakistan Day and Eid ul Fitr. The remission will not apply to those convicted of severe crimes such as murder, terrorism, espionage, rape, and other major offenses.
The relief is aimed at benefiting male prisoners aged 65 and above who have served at least one-third of their sentences, as well as female prisoners aged 60 and older who meet the same conditions. Juveniles and women prisoners with children, who have completed one-third of their terms, will also be eligible for the remission.

Meanwhile, the federal government has declared public holidays from March 31 to April 2 to celebrate Eid ul Fitr. The exact date of the holiday will be determined on March 30, when the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee convenes to sight the Shawwal moon.
This announcement comes as part of efforts to mark the end of Ramadan and provide relief to prisoners, bringing hope to many families ahead of the festive occasion.
