TikTok Removes Controversial ‘Chubby Filter’ After Backlash

TikTok

TikTok has taken down its viral AI-powered “chubby filter” following criticism from users and health experts, who warned it promoted body shaming and could trigger eating disorders. The filter, developed by ByteDance-owned CapCut, digitally altered images to make users appear overweight.

Initially shared in a lighthearted manner, the filter quickly sparked outrage as users posted before-and-after videos with captions like “This is my motivation to go to the gym.” Critics, including nutrition scientist Dr Emma Beckett, condemned it for reinforcing harmful stereotypes and toxic diet culture.

Popular TikTok creator Sadie, with over 60,000 followers, urged its removal, sharing how many users felt pressured to leave the platform due to body image concerns. TikTok has since confirmed that videos featuring the filter will no longer be recommended and may be removed for violating guidelines.

The controversy highlights ongoing debates over AI’s role in media, as platforms face increasing scrutiny over digital tools that impact self-image.
