NaNoWriMo ends after 25-year writing journey

NaNoWriMo

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the popular online writing challenge, has officially shut down after 25 years. The nonprofit cited financial struggles and community trust issues as the main reasons behind its closure, as reported by The Guardian.

Launched in 1999, NaNoWriMo encouraged writers to pen 50,000 words each November. But recent years saw declining support, especially after a 2023 controversy involving a moderator and the organisation’s stance on AI in writing. Despite growing concerns and backlash, NaNoWriMo remained active until Mondayโ€™s official farewell.

In its closing message, the nonprofit said the writing spirit will live on: โ€œWe hold no belief that people will stop writing 50,000 words in November.โ€
