PTI Leader Shehryar Afridi Sent to Jail for 14-Day Judicial Remand on May 9 Riots Case

In a recent development, Shehryar Afridi, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and former state minister for interior, has been sent to Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail by a district and sessions court in Islamabad. The court ordered a 14-day judicial remand for Afridi in connection with the May 9 riots.

Afridi was apprehended on May 16 from his residence in Islamabad under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance 1960. This particular section empowers the government to arrest individuals who are deemed to be acting in a manner that poses a threat to public safety.

On May 30, immediately after his release from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, Afridi was rearrested. The jail administration cited the completion of his “house arrest” period under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance as the reason for his release. However, the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner extended Afridi’s house arrest for an additional 15 days under the same ordinance.

On June 17, the police produced Shehryar Afridi before the local court in Islamabad, where he is facing charges related to the May 9 vandalism. The court subsequently ordered his detention in Adiala jail for a 14-day period as part of the judicial remand process.

These developments mark a significant turn of events for Shehryar Afridi, a prominent PTI leader, as he faces legal proceedings related to the May 9 riots. The case continues to garner attention and is being closely monitored by political observers and supporters alike.
