Maldives President Sets New Record With Marathon Press Conference

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has set a new world record for the longest presidential press conference, addressing the media for nearly fifteen hours, his office confirmed on Sunday. Beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, the session lasted fourteen hours and fifty-four minutes, with brief pauses for prayers.

The previous record of fourteen hours was held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2019. President Muizzuโ€™s marathon event coincided with World Press Freedom Day and emphasized the significance of factual and balanced journalism. He answered questions from both journalists and the public throughout the session.

The president also highlighted the Maldivesโ€™ rise in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, where the nation climbed two spots to 104th out of 180 countries. Approximately two dozen reporters attended the conference, with food provided during the event.

This historic press conference adds to the Maldives’ tradition of headline-grabbing political events, following former president Mohamed Nasheed’s 2009 underwater cabinet meeting aimed at raising awareness about climate change.
