Pakistan has partially lifted restrictions on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, allowing many users to access the service without relying on VPNs or proxy tools. This development comes after months of curbs imposed following the February 2024 general elections.
Since the imposition of restrictions, millions of Pakistani users had depended on third-party services to engage on the microblogging platform. The relaxation of access is being seen as a significant step towards restoring digital freedoms for users in the country.

The decision comes against the backdrop of rising military tensions with India. Earlier this week, Indian forces carried out airstrikes on six locations inside Pakistan, resulting in eight civilian deaths and 33 injuries. Pakistan’s armed forces responded decisively, shooting down five Indian aircraft involved in the strikes.
Officials confirmed that the Indian aircraft violated Pakistani airspace to launch their attacks. The Pakistan Air Force’s swift counteroffensive demonstrated the country’s military readiness during a volatile period.
