KP Waives Mountaineering Tax for Two Years, Declares 2025 as ‘Year of Tirich Mir’

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has introduced a two-year waiver on mountaineering tax to encourage tourism and adventure sports in the region.

According to the Director General of the KP Tourism Authority, the tax on climbing peaks in the Hindu Kush mountain range will be suspended from 2025 through 2026.

This initiative is part of a broader campaign to promote mountaineering, with 2025 officially designated as the “Year of Tirich Mir” in celebration of the 75th anniversary of its first successful ascent.

The mountaineering tax is a fee typically imposed on climbers—both domestic and international—who wish to summit specific peaks in KP’s mountainous regions, including the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalayas. The tax is intended to manage climbing activities, enhance local infrastructure, support environmental conservation, and benefit nearby communities.

Funds collected from the tax are used to ensure climber safety, maintain rescue services, and encourage responsible tourism practices. The temporary suspension is expected to draw more expeditions and increase regional tourism.
