Job Seeker Faces Glitchy AI Interview, Raising Concerns Over Tech in Hiring

A Houston man was caught off guard when an AI system, not a human, conducted his job interview—and it malfunctioned repeatedly. Leo Humphries, 25, shared his frustrating experience of being interviewed by a glitching AI during a video call for a national company, highlighting growing concerns about artificial intelligence in recruitment.

During the interview, the AI stuttered and looped questions without allowing Humphries to respond, leaving him confused and disappointed. Humphries was unaware the interview would be AI-led, having applied through a news company’s website. His experience echoes similar reports, such as a viral TikTok video showing an AI interviewer stuck in a question loop.

Experts warn that while AI can speed up hiring processes, it risks “dehumanising” candidates and reinforcing biases. HR consultant Bryan Driscoll criticized companies for prioritizing cost savings over fair candidate experiences, stressing the technology can exclude underrepresented groups. Josh Jones, CEO of an AI firm, described the current use of AI interviews as a “messy middle” — impressive but still unreliable for important decisions.

As AI becomes more common in hiring—from resume scans to interviews—specialists urge caution to maintain fairness and preserve the human touch. Humphries summed up the dilemma: “AI is efficient but raises questions about connection and fairness. It made me wonder how widespread this practice really is.”
