Punjab’s Bullet Train Dream Faces Major Setbacks Amid Infrastructure Challenges

Punjab’s Bullet Train Dream Faces Major Setbacks Amid Infrastructure Challenges

The Punjab government’s plan to introduce Pakistan’s first bullet train between Lahore and Rawalpindi is facing significant hurdles, with railway officials describing the project as a distant dream. The country’s current rail infrastructure, which cannot support speeds over 100 km/h, requires a complete overhaul of tracks, bridges, and signaling systems to accommodate high-speed trains.

Experts estimate the cost of building a bullet train line could range from $17 million to $40 million per kilometre, translating into an investment of hundreds of billions of rupees. The 280-kilometre route is particularly challenging due to curvy tracks and steep gradients, making safe high-speed travel difficult without major reconstruction.

Officials suggest focusing on the stalled Main Line-1 (ML-1) upgrade project as a more realistic and cost-effective alternative. Completion of ML-1 would improve speeds and rail quality, reducing the need for a full bullet train system at this stage.

There are also concerns about ticket affordability, with projected fares for the bullet train expected to exceed Rs15,000, potentially limiting access for many passengers. While Punjab’s leadership remains determined, experts urge a practical approach prioritizing existing rail improvements before investing in expensive bullet train technology.
