The under-construction Chashma-5 Nuclear Power Plant is set to add 1,200 megawatts of clean and cost-effective electricity to Pakistan’s national grid, further strengthening the country’s energy security and sustainability efforts.
During a media briefing at the Chashma Nuclear Complex, General Manager Engineer Habibur Rehman highlighted Pakistan’s goal of expanding its nuclear power capacity to 8,000MW. He emphasized that nuclear energy is becoming a crucial part of the national energy mix, providing reliable and eco-friendly electricity.

Media representatives toured the site and were briefed on the plant’s advanced safety features, technical systems, and compliance with international environmental standards. Chashma-5, based on the third-generation Hualong One reactor, is a joint project of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and China National Nuclear Corporation.
Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear reactors generating a total of 3,530MW, with the output expected to rise to 4,730MW upon the completion of Chashma-5. Nuclear energy contributed about 13% of the country’s power in 2024, reaching 26.5% in December alone.
Experts say the project reflects a global resurgence of nuclear power, as several developed countries renew investments in the sector to meet future energy and climate goals.
