Apple Turns iPhones Into Digital Passports With iOS 26 Update

Apple

Apple is set to transform travel and identity verification with iOS 26, which will introduce a new digital ID feature allowing U.S. iPhone users to create an ID based on their passport. The update, expected later this year, marks a major step in Apple’s mission to make the iPhone a central hub for identity, payments, and mobility.

The digital ID will live in the Wallet app and will initially be accepted at select TSA checkpoints across 14 U.S. airports. However, it won’t replace physical passports for international travel — at least not yet. Apple says the feature will be limited to domestic use, although expansion is likely over time.

The system builds on Apple’s current digital driver’s licence feature, already supported in nine U.S. states. Users will likely scan their passport and verify their identity using FaceID before receiving approval from the U.S. Department of State.

Beyond travel, the digital ID will also be used in apps requiring identity or age verification, such as for banking or accessing restricted platforms, giving users added convenience and control.
