WhatsApp Rolls Out AI Message Summaries with Privacy-First Approach

Meta has introduced a new AI-powered feature on WhatsApp called “Message Summaries,” aimed at helping users quickly catch up on unread messages without compromising their privacy. The feature uses Meta AI to generate brief summaries of conversations, visible only to the user.

Meta emphasized that the feature is entirely optional and turned off by default. A small icon will appear when the feature becomes available, and summaries are kept private from other chat participants. “No one else in the chat can see that you summarised unread messages,” the company clarified in a blog post.

The feature builds on Meta’s AI infrastructure launched earlier this year and is powered by its “Private Processing” technology, which ensures that all messages remain encrypted. Meta and WhatsApp will not have access to message content or the summaries generated.

Initially rolling out in the U.S. with English-language support, the feature is expected to expand to other regions and languages later this year. Users can manage the feature through the new Private Processing section under Settings > Chats.

This move signals Meta’s deeper push into AI while trying to address mounting global concerns over digital privacy and user data security.
