A shocking act of violence unfolded in central Mexico as gunmen stormed a sports hall and fatally shot a senior city official during a basketball game, sparking outrage across the region.

Ignacio Alejandro Roaro, the city council secretary of Apaseo el Grande, was attending an amateur match when he was killed in front of families and children gathered at the venue in Guanajuato. The city council condemned the attack, calling it “treacherous, despicable and cowardly.”

According to local media, an armed suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack. Authorities are investigating whether the killing was gang-related, as Guanajuato continues to grapple with rising violence fueled by turf wars between powerful cartels.

Once known for its tourism and industrial boom, Guanajuato has become Mexico’s most violent state. In just the last few months, mass killings and discoveries of mass graves have plagued towns like Irapuato, just west of where this latest shooting occurred.

The state recorded over 3,000 murders last year alone—more than 10% of the nation’s total—largely due to clashes between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel.
