The funeral of Maulana Khan Zeb, senior leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) and Secretary for Religious Affairs, was held in his hometown of Nawagai on Wednesday. He was shot dead a day earlier in a tragic incident that also claimed the life of a police constable.
Thousands of people, including political workers, tribal elders, and local residents, gathered to pay their last respects. The funeral was attended by key ANP leaders such as Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Sardar Hussain Babak, and MNAs from Bajaur—Nisar Baz, Dr. Hameed, and Anwar Zeb Khan.
Maulana Khan Zeb was buried in his ancestral graveyard, and the ceremony was marked by visible grief and emotional scenes. Supporters and locals wept openly, mourning the loss of a respected leader known for his commitment to peace and religious harmony.
Earlier the same day, a separate funeral was held for police constable Sherzada, who also lost his life in the same attack. He, too, was honored with a large public gathering that reflected the sorrow felt by the community.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) strongly condemned the killing of Maulana Khan Zeb. In a statement posted on X, the HRCP called him “a leading peace campaigner and political leader of the ANP.” The organization demanded a fair and swift investigation into the incident.
HRCP also urged federal and provincial governments to restore peace in the violence-hit regions. They emphasized the need to protect citizens and ensure that people can live without fear.
The death of Maulana Khan Zeb is being seen as a significant blow to the ANP and to the broader movement for peace in the tribal regions. His contributions will be remembered as leaders and citizens continue to call for justice.
