An earthquake shook several parts of Pakistan late on Friday night, causing fear among residents. The tremors were felt just after 2:00 AM Pakistan Standard Time.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4. It struck at a depth of 102 kilometres. The epicentre was located in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre gave slightly different details. It reported the earthquake at a depth of 124 kilometres, about 121km east of Baghlฤn, Afghanistan.
Tremors were felt in many areas across Pakistan. In Punjab, they were reported in Lahore, Islamabad, Murree, Wah Cantt, Kasur, and Sargodha. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, people felt the quake in Peshawar, Swat, Nowshera, Mardan, Malakand, Haripur, Dir, Shangla, Balakot, Charsadda, and Hangu.
People living in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan also experienced the tremors. Districts such as Ghizer reported noticeable shaking.
The earthquake did not cause any immediate reports of damage or injuries. However, many people rushed out of their homes in fear.
Reports also came in from across the border. Residents in India, Afghanistan, and India-held Kashmir said they felt the shaking too. Social media platforms were quickly filled with posts about the late-night event.
Experts say the Hindukush region is known for deep earthquakes. These are common but do not always lead to major damage.
Authorities are monitoring the situation. Citizens are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during aftershocks.
