Indian Army Officer Assaults Airline Staff Over Baggage Dispute at Srinagar Airport

A senior officer of the Indian Army has found himself at the center of controversy after a violent incident at Srinagar International Airport.

The serving Lieutenant Colonel is accused of assaulting multiple SpiceJet staff members during a dispute over excess cabin baggage charges.

The altercation took place when the officer was about to board SpiceJet flight SG 386 to Delhi. According to a statement from SpiceJet, the confrontation began when ground crew informed the officer that he was carrying more hand baggage than allowed by the airline’s policy and requested him to pay an additional charge.

The officer’s reaction was extreme and violent. SpiceJet claims that the officer physically attacked the staff, using punches, kicks, and even a metal queue stand as a weapon.

Four employees were injured during the incident, one suffering a spinal fracture and another a serious jaw injury. In addition, a third staff member was allegedly kicked, and a fourth who tried to intervene was struck in the face, causing him to bleed. The injured staff members were quickly taken for medical treatment.

Initially, the incident received limited attention. However, when a disturbing video of the assault surfaced online, it sparked outrage across the nation. The footage shows the officer striking staff with a metal barrier while bystanders attempt to stop him.

In response to the incident, police in Jammu and Kashmir have filed a case under serious charges, including attempted murder. Authorities have launched a formal investigation to uncover the full details of the incident and determine who should be held accountable.

This troubling episode has raised significant concerns about the training and behavior of Indian Army personnel, particularly when it comes to handling stressful situations.

The Indian Army is known for its discipline, and this incident has prompted questions about the standards of conduct for its officers.

The case continues to unfold, and the public awaits further updates on the investigation.
