GILGIT – A deadly landslide in Pakistan’s Gilgit Baltistan has claimed at least nine lives and left three people critically injured. The incident occurred near Manoga Nullah in Gilgit, following days of heavy rain.
Local officials said the landslide struck when over a dozen volunteers were repairing a damaged water channel. Without warning, a mass of mud and rocks collapsed, burying them under debris.
Rescue teams, supported by residents, recovered nine bodies and rescued nine survivors. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where several remain in critical condition.
The disaster also destroyed the main road linking Hunza with other parts of the country. Authorities have diverted traffic through Sas Valley Road from Murtazabad to restore connectivity.
Floodwaters, fueled by melting glacial ice, swept through farms, uprooted trees, and damaged both public infrastructure and private property. In Hassanabad, the Hassanabad Nullah’s erosion has placed more than 50 houses in danger. Ten homes have already collapsed, and many others show deep cracks.
Officials have issued warnings about further risks, as the unstable terrain remains highly vulnerable to more landslides and flooding. Local residents have been urged to remain alert and evacuate if necessary.
Gilgit Baltistan, known for its stunning landscapes, faces increasing threats from extreme weather and climate-related disasters. Experts warn that continuous rainfall, combined with glacial melting, could worsen the region’s vulnerability in the coming weeks.
