Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was detained by Delhi Police on Monday morning. He, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior opposition MPs, took part in a protest march.
The march aimed to submit a complaint at the Election Commission’s office, questioning its impartiality in upcoming elections.
The protest was organized by the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties. The group alleges that the Election Commission is favoring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Police said only 30 MPs were allowed to meet the poll officials. However, over 200 MPs arrived, leading to a standoff.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla said officers stopped protesters from breaking barricades. “Some MPs tried jumping barricades and were detained,” he added. Rahul Gandhi and other leaders were escorted to police buses.
Rahul Gandhi spoke to reporters during detention. He said, “This fight is not political—it is to save the Constitution. The fight is for one person, one vote. We want a clean and accurate voter list.”
Priyanka Gandhi also accused the government of fearing dissent. She said, “They are afraid. The government is cowardly.”
Visuals from the protest showed a large crowd with leaders and supporters holding placards and chanting slogans. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen climbing over two barricades before being detained by police.
The detained leaders were taken to a nearby police station. Opposition parties have promised to continue their campaign. They demand electoral transparency and accountability ahead of the upcoming elections.
Rahul Gandhi’s detention has once again highlighted concerns about the Election Commission’s neutrality. The opposition insists their protest is about protecting democracy, not just political rivalry.
