Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to expand its European routes. PIA to Launch Flights to Two Major European Cities reflects this new push.
The Defence Minister has asked PIA to prioritize Barcelona and Milan. He cited the large Pakistani communities living there. Milan is especially important, as many people from Sialkot reside in the city. Sialkot is the minister’s hometown.
This expansion follows the recent end of the UK’s ban on Pakistani carriers. The ban was lifted in July after aviation authorities improved safety standards.
PIA has already restarted flights to the UK. Three weekly Boeing 777 flights now operate to Manchester. Next, the airline plans to reintroduce routes from Islamabad and Lahore to London and Birmingham. Those routes need regulatory approval.
Earlier this year, PIA resumed service to Europe. It restarted flights to Paris in January.
Some background: in 2020, PIA was banned from flying to Europe (and the UK/US) after safety concerns related to fake pilot licences and a tragic crash.
