Government Announces New Amount for Blood Money

The Government of Pakistan has officially announced the new amount for Diyat (blood money) for the fiscal year 2025–26. According to a notification issued by the Finance Division, the Diyat amount has been set at Rs. 9,828,670, which is equivalent to 30,630 grams of silver. This adjustment reflects the current market value of silver and aligns with Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which mandates the annual update of the Diyat amount based on prevailing silver prices.

Legal Framework and Annual Adjustments

Under the PPC, the Diyat amount is recalculated each year to ensure it accurately represents the value of 30,630 grams of silver. This practice ensures that the compensation amount remains consistent with the economic conditions and the value of silver in the market. The updated amount is mandatory for courts and relevant institutions handling Diyat cases during the specified fiscal year.

Implications for Legal Cases

The revised Diyat amount will be applicable in all legal proceedings involving Diyat during the 2025–26 fiscal year. Courts are required to adhere to this updated figure when determining compensation in cases of murder, bodily harm, or property damage, as per the provisions of the PPC.

The government’s announcement of the new Diyat amount underscores its commitment to ensuring that compensation for victims or their legal heirs remains equitable and reflective of current market values. This adjustment aims to maintain fairness in the application of the law and uphold justice in cases involving serious offenses.
