PDMA Warns of Flood Risk in Punjab Rivers

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a flood warning as heavy monsoon activity continues across the province.

According to a PDMA spokesman, medium to high flooding has been reported in major rivers, including the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej, as well as smaller streams and drains. A strong surge in the Chenab River is expected within 24 hours due to heavy inflows from the Tawi River near Jammu.

Officials said that New Delhi had already alerted Islamabad about the possible flood risk in the Tawi River. PDMA cautioned that rising water levels may affect several districts, including Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Chiniot, Jhang, and nearby areas.

Authorities in Gujrat and Sialkot have been instructed to remain on high alert to handle any emergency situation. At Marala headworks, the Chenab River recorded an inflow of 127,000 cusecs and an outflow of 109,000 cusecs. At Khanki headworks, inflows stood at 128,000 cusecs, with 121,000 cusecs outflow.

The Sutlej River is experiencing high flood at Ganda Singh Wala with 133,000 cusecs water flow, while at Sulemanki headworks, medium flood levels have been reported with 94,000 cusecs inflow and 87,000 cusecs outflow. The Ravi River is in low flood at Jassar with 53,000 cusecs. Meanwhile, the Indus River remains in low flood at Kalabagh and Chashma.

PDMA also warned of potential flash floods in hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan. Citizens living near riverbeds have been advised to move to safer areas immediately. Relief camps have been set up in the affected districts to provide shelter and assistance.

The Director General PDMA urged people to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety during the ongoing flood situation.
