Karachi’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has remanded Chanesar Town Chairman Farhan Ghani and others into police custody until August 28. They face allegations of violence against government employees.
During the hearing at Central Jail Karachi, the prosecutor claimed the accused assaulted workers under official supervision. However, when asked which government institution the employees belonged to, the prosecutor could not provide a clear answer.
The court also questioned the use of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) for the case. The prosecution argued that violence against government officials justified the terrorism-related charges and requested a 14-day physical remand for further investigation.
Farhan Ghani appeared in court and denied all allegations, calling them “false and politically motivated.” He explained that he only stopped workers to ask about their activities and reminded them that, as town chairman, he had the authority to halt unauthorized digging of roads.
“I did not commit any violence. I only asked what they were doing on the road and whether they had permission,” he said.
Following the case registration, Farhan Ghani and his associates surrendered at Firozabad police station. The court initially granted a one-day transit remand before extending police custody until August 28 for further investigation.
Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani confirmed the arrest of his brother in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He stated that Farhan Ghani and his colleagues had presented themselves to the police and would prove their innocence in court.
“My brother Farhan Ghani (Town Chairman) and some colleagues had a fight with a person named Sohail yesterday, and today he has registered a case, which is his legal right,” Saeed Ghani wrote. “All those named in the case have presented themselves before police and will face the law.”
This development has sparked discussions about political tensions in Karachi, with Saeed Ghani assuring that the legal process will determine the truth. Farhan Ghani and his associates remain in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the alleged incident.
