A flood alert issued across Punjab has prompted mass evacuations as rising river levels threaten lives and property across the province. The alert followed India’s release of additional water into the Sutlej River, reported by Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources through diplomatic channels.
Authorities confirmed that high-level flooding is expected in Harike, Ferozepur, and southern districts. Civil administration, the Pakistan Army, and rescue agencies have been mobilized to respond. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also warned of further rises in water levels, urging residents in low-lying areas to relocate immediately.
In Multan, officials are planning a controlled breach at the Sher Shah embankment to manage Chenab River flows, which have already reached 400,000 cusecs. Trimmu is expected to release over 540,000 cusecs, and nearby settlements are on alert. Road and rail traffic will also be suspended to ensure public safety.
Nationwide impact of floods is severe. Over 4.2 million people in 4,300 villages have been affected. According to reports, Punjab has recorded 216 deaths, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported 484 fatalities. Other regions including Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir have also suffered heavy losses in lives, homes, and livestock.
Rescue 1122 confirmed evacuating more than 10,800 people in Punjab, with 350,000 people and 300,000 animals relocated so far. Unfortunately, tragic incidents have been reported, including a boat capsizing in Rahim Yar Khan, killing five people.
With dams nearing full capacity, including Tarbela and Mangla, authorities fear further flooding if heavy rains persist. A fresh flood alert issued across Punjab highlights the urgency of coordinated relief and rescue operations as officials brace for more challenges.
