RAWALPINDI β Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, along with party lawyer Naeem Panjutha and others, has been booked for violence against journalist Tayyab Baloch. The incident occurred outside Adiala Jail on Monday.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at Rawalpindi Saddar Bairooni Police Station, Baloch was covering proceedings related to the Toshakhana case around 3:55pm when Aleema Khan and her associates held a media talk.
Baloch claimed that Naeem Panjutha shouted, βTeach him a lesson for questioning Aleema about properties,β prompting 35-40 people to grab and assault him. During the attack, an unknown individual allegedly snatched his mobile phone and broke his microphone. Other journalists who tried to intervene were also attacked.
The FIR noted that the violence stemmed from Balochβs earlier questions to Aleema Khan regarding her property purchases in the United States. He alleged that Aleema Khan had previously posted images of him and other reporters on social media and conducted a propaganda campaign against them.
Authorities registered the case under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including rioting, unlawful assembly, theft, mischief causing damage, and criminal intimidation. Baloch requested legal action against Aleema Khan, Panjutha, and the other suspects.
In response, Naeem Panjutha posted on X (formerly Twitter) claiming the FIR against him and Aleema Khan was βfake.β
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned the attack, stating on X that Baloch was targeted βsolely and only because of a difference of opinion, which is unacceptable.β He added that strict action would be taken, emphasizing his support for journalists and denouncing violence as a means of resolving disagreements.
This incident has sparked concerns over journalist safety, highlighting tensions between media personnel and political figures in Pakistan. Aleema Khanβs role in the attack remains under investigation, with authorities examining the claims detailed in the FIR.
