WASHINGTON: The House Oversight Committee has summoned the CEOs of Discord, Twitch, Reddit, and Steam to testify on October 8 about their tech platforms’ alleged roles in online radicalisation.
According to the committee, the hearing aims to examine how these tech platforms may have been used in recent politically motivated attacks. The letters sent to company executives request detailed explanations of measures to prevent misuse of their services.
Rep. James Comer, chairman of the Oversight Committee, cited the murder of conservative figure Charlie Kirk and other politically motivated incidents as the reason for congressional intervention. He emphasized that Congress has a responsibility to hold tech platforms accountable for the promotion of violence.
Discord confirmed it plans to testify in October. A company spokesperson stated that Discord maintains regular communication with policymakers and intends to continue those discussions. Reddit, in a separate statement to Reuters, said it is investigating any links between its platform and the recent killing of Kirk.
Charlie Kirk, an associate of former President Donald Trump, was shot and killed last week while speaking at an event in Utah. Reports indicate that the alleged attacker, Tyler Robinson, admitted to the killing in a Discord message shortly before his arrest. Bullets used in the attack reportedly contained engravings referencing internet memes and video games, raising questions about the role of tech platforms in spreading harmful content.
The committee plans to question executives on the steps their platforms are taking to prevent radicalisation and online violence. Observers say this hearing could set a precedent for how tech platforms are regulated in the United States.
