Federal Finance and Revenue Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan at the Finance Division on Friday.
The meeting focused on the ongoing flood situation in Gilgit-Baltistan and reviewed federal support for flood relief operations in the region. Senator Aurangzeb recalled his recent visit to the area and acknowledged the challenges communities face due to heavy rains and flooding. He highlighted that federal funds have been released to ensure timely assistance and recovery efforts.
The finance minister praised the progress made in road infrastructure and new investments in the tourism sector. He stressed that Gilgit-Baltistan has immense natural beauty and significant potential for tourism-led growth. However, he underlined that all development must follow strict building regulations and environmental laws to preserve the fragile ecosystem.
He also emphasized the importance of responsible investment, particularly in waste and water management, to safeguard natural resources. Aurangzeb encouraged the Gilgit-Baltistan government to explore new revenue-generation streams. He further noted the need to strengthen airports, roads, and tourism spots to attract package tourism, especially from Gulf countries.
Chief Minister Gulbar Khan briefed the minister about ongoing infrastructure projects, highlighting that Skardu International Airport is already seeing increased traffic. He shared that plans are underway to upgrade Gilgit Airport to international standards, which will further boost tourism in the region.
The chief minister thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the federal government for prioritizing the needs of Gilgit-Baltistan. He also outlined plans to improve public services across all 10 districts. These include hiring additional staff and providing better career progression opportunities for senior officers in the GB Secretariat.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to continue supporting flood relief, rehabilitation, and sustainable development in Gilgit-Baltistan.
