QUETTA β The Balochistan High Court (BHC) has granted bail to tribal elder Sardar Sherbaz Khan Satakzai in the Degari double murder case, where a couple was killed in the name of so-called honour.
The bail order was issued by a single-judge bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kasi on Monday. Satakzai, arrested in July this year, was released after submitting surety bonds worth Rs500,000.
According to police, Satakzai had allegedly endorsed the killings through a jirga, which ruled against the couple. Acting on the jirgaβs decision, the womanβs brother reportedly opened fire on his 40-year-old sister, Bano Bibi, and her companion, Ehsanullah. Both were killed on the spot in front of dozens of people.
The Degari double murder case came into the spotlight after a video of the shooting went viral on social media over a month later. Police surgeon Dr Ayesha confirmed that Bano Bibi had been shot seven times while Ehsanullah received nine bullets.
Following the incident, police launched a wide investigation and arrested several suspects, including Sardar Sherbaz Khan Satakzai. So far, 17 people have been taken into custody in connection with the case. Among them were Bano Bibiβs mother and another brother, though the mother was later released on bail.
Despite multiple arrests, the prime suspect, the brother who fired the fatal shots, remains at large. Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to trace and arrest him.
The Degari double murder case has drawn national attention, with rights activists demanding strict punishment for all those involved. The courtβs decision to grant bail to Satakzai has sparked debate over the role of tribal jirgas and the need to ensure justice for victims of honour killings in Balochistan.
