NEW DELHI โ The family of Pakistanโs founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah is involved in a legal case over alleged forgery and cheating in a decades-old land deal.
Police in Mumbai, Maharashtra, have filed a case against businessman Nusli Wadia, Jinnah grandson, along with his wife Maureen Wadia, Jehangir Wadia, H.J. Bamji, and other family members. The allegations involve submitting forged and fabricated documents in a legal dispute with Ferani Hotels Pvt Ltd.
The case was registered following orders from the Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Borivli. The court directed Bangur Nagar police to investigate the allegations of cheating and forgery.
The dispute dates back to a 30-year-old development agreement between Wadia and Ferani Hotels for a land plot in Malad. According to the agreement, Ferani Hotels was to collaborate with builder K. Raheja and pay Wadia 12% of the gross sale proceeds.
Tensions escalated in 2008 when disagreements arose over Wadiaโs share of sales and land management. This led to a long legal battle spanning multiple courts, including the Supreme Court of India.
The allegations include mala fide intent, lack of authority, and commercial disputes. Several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are invoked, covering cheating, forgery, possession of forged documents, and criminal conspiracy.
Ferani Hotels claimed the Wadia family submitted forged documents to the Bombay High Court around 15 years ago during the commercial dispute. The complaint was first lodged with Bangur Nagar police on March 15 and later with the Mumbai Police Commissioner on March 24, but no FIR was registered at that time.
Finally, on September 20, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Borivli directed the police to formally register the case. Legal experts say the case highlights prolonged property disputes in India involving high-profile families.
This marks one of the rare instances where a Jinnah grandson has been directly involved in a high-profile legal controversy outside Pakistan. The case continues to attract attention due to the prominence of the Wadia family and their historic link to Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
