KARACHI – Senior journalist and television anchor Imtiaz Mir has passed away in a private hospital, a week after being targeted in a gun attack in Malir.
According to family members and police, he died on Sunday night while receiving treatment for severe injuries. His brother confirmed the news to local media.
Imtiaz Mir, who was associated with Metro News, was shot on September 21 while returning home from work. The incident happened near Kala Board, Malir, as he was traveling along the National Highway toward Quaidabad with his elder brother, Muhammad Saleh.
Police reports stated that six armed men riding on two motorcycles intercepted their car. The attackers opened indiscriminate fire, leaving Mir critically injured. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the face and chest, while his brother suffered only minor injuries.
The injured journalist was rushed to Liaquat National Hospital, where doctors kept him under intensive care. Despite efforts to save his life, Imtiaz Mir remained in critical condition until his death.
His brother, Riaz Ali, who is also the complainant in the case, confirmed the tragic development. Police have since registered a case against a man and his sons, linking the attack to a land dispute in Thul Tehsil of Jacobabad.
Authorities have assured that investigations are underway to arrest those responsible for the incident. Journalists’ associations and rights groups have also condemned the killing, demanding swift action against the culprits and better protection for media workers.
The death of Imtiaz Mir has sent shockwaves through the journalism community, highlighting once again the dangers faced by reporters in Pakistan. Colleagues and media organizations paid tribute to his work and expressed grief over the loss of an experienced voice in journalism.
