Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that it will resume production in the coming days following a cyber-attack that halted operations on 1 September. The shutdown affected its three UK facilities in the West Midlands and Merseyside.
A phased restart will begin at the engine facility in Wolverhampton on 6 October, with production at other plants returning gradually. A JLR spokesperson said, “Today we are informing colleagues, retailers, and suppliers that some sections of our manufacturing operations will resume in the coming days.”
Industry sources warn that full production may take several weeks to achieve. JLR is working closely with cybersecurity experts, the UK government’s National Cyber Security Centre, and law enforcement to ensure a safe and secure restart.
The cyber-attack had created severe financial pressure on JLR’s supply chain, which employs around 100,000 people across multiple firms. Many smaller suppliers faced the risk of bankruptcy, as some supply parts exclusively to JLR.
The UK government announced loan guarantees worth £1.5 billion to support JLR and its suppliers. The funding aims to ease cash flow and help pay for parts orders, ensuring that production can restart without further disruptions. A JLR spokesperson thanked employees, suppliers, and partners for their patience, stating, “The foundational work of our recovery is firmly underway, and we will continue to provide updates as we progress.”
This cyber-attack is part of a wider series of breaches affecting UK companies this year. Other targets have included retailers like Harrods, M&S, and Co-op, leading to significant financial losses.
