A District and Sessions Court on Tuesday indicted Advocate Imaan Mazari and Advocate Abdul Hadi Ali Chattha in the controversial tweet case linked to state and national security institutions.
The indictment was announced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majuka during the hearing. However, both accused were not present in the courtroom when the charges were read out.
Instead, their assistant counsel appeared before the court and informed the judge that the couple had earlier attended the proceedings but later left to appear in another case being heard in Rawalpindi.
The court inquired under whose permission they had left the premises. Despite their absence, the judge proceeded to read out the charges and directed the prosecution witnesses to appear on the same day at 1:30 pm.
The assistant counsel requested a copy of the indictment order for the defense team. The court, however, instructed that a formal application be filed in line with the legal procedure before such a copy could be provided.
The hearing was later adjourned until 1:30 pm for the appearance of prosecution witnesses.
The indictment of Imaan Mazari and her co-accused marks another significant development in the ongoing legal battle over the controversial tweet case. Legal experts believe the trial will now move toward witness testimonies and evidence presentation, which could play a crucial role in shaping the outcome.
Supporters of Imaan Mazari have continued to follow the case closely, viewing it as part of a broader debate on freedom of expression and criticism of state institutions. The upcoming proceedings are expected to determine the direction of this high-profile trial.
