Karachi residents were shaken on Wednesday morning after a light earthquake measuring 3.2 magnitude hit the city. The tremors, though mild, created panic among citizens who rushed out of their homes and workplaces.
According to the National Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at 9:34am. Its epicentre was located around 7 kilometres northwest of Malir. The seismic activity was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, which made it more noticeable on the surface despite its low magnitude.
Residents across different areas of Karachi, especially near Malir, reported feeling vibrations. Many people described the tremors as strong enough to cause fear, though they lasted only a short time. In some neighborhoods, citizens gathered outside buildings until they felt safe to return indoors.
Fortunately, no damage to property or loss of life has been reported. Authorities confirmed that all essential services are functioning normally. The Meteorological Department and related agencies are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Experts have explained that such low-intensity earthquakes are often caused by natural energy release along fault lines. While they usually do not result in destruction, they serve as reminders of the regionโs seismic vulnerability.
Citizens have been advised to stay calm but alert. Safety officials recommend basic precautionary measures, such as knowing emergency exits and having an emergency kit at home.
The latest earthquake highlights the importance of disaster preparedness in urban areas like Karachi. Even minor tremors can create widespread fear, underscoring the need for public awareness about earthquake safety.
