OpenAI has introduced Sora 2, its next-generation AI video and audio model, along with a new social media app, Sora. The app is designed to rival traditional short-video platforms. OpenAI says, “Forget TikTok,” as Sora allows users to generate and share AI-powered clips featuring themselves and friends.
Available on iOS in the U.S. and Canada, the app lets users upload a one-time video and audio sample for identity verification. Once approved, they can insert their likeness into AI-generated clips through a βcameosβ feature. Friends can also include each other in multi-person AI videos, creating interactive experiences unlike anything on TikTok.
Sora 2 represents a major upgrade from last yearβs original Sora model. The AI now produces videos that follow the laws of physics, delivering realistic results. For example, objects no longer bend or teleport unnaturally. Demonstrations show lifelike beach volleyball matches, skateboarding tricks, gymnastics routines, and diving board cannonballs, all rendered with precise motion and physics.
OpenAI emphasizes that the social app experience makes Sora 2 unique. βWe think a social app built around this βcameosβ feature is the best way to experience the magic of Sora 2,β the company said, encouraging users to “Forget TikTok” and explore AI-generated video content instead.
Privacy and safety are also key components. Sora uses algorithm-driven recommendations based on activity, location, and ChatGPT conversation history, with opt-out options available. Parental controls allow oversight for children, including limiting infinite scroll, algorithmic personalization, and messaging.
The app is free to download and explore. Monetization will focus on charging users only for generating additional videos during peak demand. Initially invite-only, Sora 2 Pro is accessible to ChatGPT Pro users without an invite. OpenAI plans to expand availability beyond the U.S. and Canada soon.
With Sora 2, OpenAI offers a revolutionary alternative for short-video creation, urging users to “Forget TikTok” and experience the future of AI-powered social media.
