KARACHI: The District and Sessions Courts on Saturday issued an arrest warrant for journalist and YouTuber Imran Riaz Khan in connection with a case related to a social media campaign against Judge Humayun Dilawar.
According to court sources, Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah approved the arrest warrant on the request of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). The NCCIA had sought legal permission to act after completing a preliminary investigation into the alleged online campaign.
Officials stated that the inquiry revealed evidence suggesting that Imran Riaz Khan and several others were involved in organizing and promoting online content that targeted Judge Humayun Dilawar. The judge has recently faced widespread social media criticism following various high-profile cases.
The NCCIA moved the court after collecting initial findings indicating potential violations of cybercrime laws. The court, after reviewing the agencyβs request, authorized the issuance of the warrant, allowing authorities to proceed with legal action against the journalist.
The case against Imran Riaz Khan highlights growing scrutiny over social media activity involving commentary on judicial figures. Legal experts note that online criticism of judges, when deemed defamatory or malicious, can lead to serious legal consequences under Pakistanβs cybercrime laws.
So far, neither Imran Riaz Khan nor his legal team has publicly commented on the warrant. However, his supporters have expressed concern on social media, calling the move an attempt to silence critical voices.
The NCCIA has stated that further action will be taken in accordance with the law once the accused is taken into custody. Authorities have also warned that similar actions may follow against others found participating in the campaign.
