Rising star Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma. The 26-year-old will lead the national side in a three-match series against Australia, beginning on October 19.
The decision was finalized during a selection committee meeting led by former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad, where India recently defeated the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs. According to reports, the selectors made the move to allow Shubman Gill to gain leadership experience ahead of the 2027 ICC World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
The selection panel, which included India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, agreed that Gill represents the future of Indian cricket. He now holds leadership roles across all formats — serving as Test and ODI captain and vice-captain of the T20I side.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has been retained in the ODI squad purely as a batter, alongside Virat Kohli. This will mark the first time both veterans represent India together since the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Rohit, who captained India in ODIs since December 2021, led the team in 56 matches, winning 42 and losing 12. His tenure saw India win two Asia Cup titles (2018 and 2023) and reach the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Earlier this year, Shubman Gill took over as India’s Test captain following Rohit’s retirement from the format. He led India to a 2-2 series draw in England and topped the charts with 754 runs at an average of 75.40.
Rohit and Kohli have both stepped away from Tests and T20Is. Their return in the upcoming ODI series marks their first international appearance in over seven months.
India’s ODI series against Australia will be played on October 19, 23, and 25, followed by five T20Is from October 29 to November 8.
