Munich Airport Slowly Reopens After Drone Sightings

Munich Airport Slowly Reopens After Drone Sightings

A Reuters report says Munich airport begins slow reopening after late-night drone sightings. The airport had shut both runways overnight after drones were seen near flight paths.

The closure forced dozens of flights to be cancelled or diverted. Nearly 6,500 passengers were affected. Some were stranded in terminals until services resumed.

Operations restarted early Saturday. The airport began gradual reopening from 7 a.m. local time. Delays and disruptions were expected throughout the day.

Airport authorities said the decision to reopen followed security checks. They monitored runways and confirmed no further drone threats. Yet they warned that operations remained fragile.

Officials reminded travellers to verify flight status with airlines. Some flights were still subject to change as the system recovered.

This was the second major drone disruption in less than 24 hours. The airport had already suspended flights late Thursday into Friday over similar sightings.

German air traffic control said the closures were precautionary. They cited β€œunconfirmed drone sightings” near the airport’s north and south runways.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to toughen drone laws. He proposed faster powers for police to request military help in dealing with drone threats.

Across Europe, other airports also reported mysterious drone sightings. Some officials pointed fingers at cross-border interference. Russia was among the suspected actors, though it denied involvement.

In Munich, airlines and airport staff worked to assist passengers. Camp beds, water, and snacks were distributed where needed. The disruptions added strain to travel schedules.

In a later statement, the airport operator reaffirmed that services would resume cautiously. It urged patience and vigilance during recovery.

As daylight strengthened, investigators inspected surveillance footage and sensor logs. Authorities pledged a full investigation into the source of the drone incursions.

For now, the headline remains: Munich airport begins slow reopening after late-night drone sightings. The unfolding events highlight growing concerns over aviation security and drone threats across Europe.
