The Supreme Court of Pakistan has approved the live broadcast of hearings on appeals related to the 26th Constitutional Amendment, allowing the public to follow the proceedings in real time.
An eight-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin, granted permission for the live broadcast on Tuesday. The decision was made to promote transparency and ensure that the public remains informed about important judicial matters.
During the hearing, the bench supported the requests filed by petitioners seeking live broadcast of the proceedings. The Additional Attorney General noted that the decision ultimately rests with the bench. After brief deliberation, the court ruled in favor of the applicants, marking another step toward openness in the judiciary.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel, however, cautioned that while such broadcasts serve an educational purpose, they are sometimes βmisusedβ by individuals or groups for non-constructive commentary.
The court also decided to hear a related petition by former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, who challenged the registrarβs objections regarding the formation of a full court. Advocate Shahid Jamil argued that the Practice and Procedure Committeeβs earlier decision to form a full court remains valid and should be implemented. Justice Aminuddin assured that the case would be scheduled for a public hearing soon.
A light moment occurred during the session when lawyer Faisal Siddiqui joked with Justice Aminuddin about his upcoming retirement, prompting laughter in the courtroom. Justice Aminuddin responded humorously, correcting the lawyerβs βmiscalculatedβ timeline.
The proceedings ended on a positive note as the bench adjourned the hearing until Wednesday morning. The live broadcast initiative marks a major milestone for judicial transparency in Pakistan, allowing citizens to witness court deliberations firsthand.
