A local journalist, Tufail Ahmed Rind, was shot dead by armed men in Mirpur Mathelo on Wednesday morning. Rind was taking his children to school when the attack occurred. Fortunately, the children were unharmed.
Police reported that the gunmen opened fire at Rind, a correspondent for a regional newspaper, killing him instantly. His body was moved to Mirpur Mathelo Hospital for postmortem procedures.
The attack has sparked outrage among local media workers. Dozens of journalists from Ghotki gathered at the scene to condemn the killing and demand immediate action.
Authorities said the murder may be linked to a personal dispute, in which Rind was allegedly involved in a prior murder case. The police have launched an investigation into the heinous crime to identify and arrest the assailants.
This tragic incident highlights the growing risks for journalists in northern Sindh. Last year, at least two other journalists were killed in Ghotki district. Nasrullah Gadani was fatally shot in May near Mirpur Mathelo by unidentified attackers, while Bachal Ghuniyo was also killed in Rawanti area, with his body moved to Ubauro Hospital.
Ghotki district, located near Sindh’s katcha area, is notorious for violent crimes including killings, kidnappings, and attacks by dacoit gangs. These lawless terrains have increasingly endangered journalists reporting on local affairs and criminal activities.
Media experts and local authorities have called for stricter security measures for journalists operating in high-risk regions. The repeated targeting of journalists has raised serious concerns about press safety and freedom of expression in northern Sindh.
The local community, media organizations, and authorities are now urging swift action to bring the killers to justice and ensure protection for journalists reporting on critical issues in lawless areas.
